Swiss beat Turks in soccer match; Turks beat Swiss in Tunnel
Violence erupted after Switzerland beat Turkey at home and qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The Swiss advanced on Wednesday due to away goals, since the aggregate score for the two games were 4-4.
As both teams left the pitch and headed towards the locker room, a brawl ensued in the tunnel and one Swiss player was hospitalized. In typical football fashion, the fight consisted of kicks and curse words.
Turkey now faces disciplinary action which might ban them from the next World Cup in 2010. "If we're going to be penalized, we'll work to be sure that Switzerland gets the same penalty," Turkish federation president Levent Bicakci said.
