Nintendo Fever

Over the weekend, Ferda has defeated the final castle and last Bowser boss in the new super mario bros game for the DS. Also over the weekend we got to play more Wii since our friends Jmo and Heather bought one. They came over Saturday night, we had dinner, then played Wii til Heather was falling asleep. It sure is fun. We played all the sports games I think... Ferda destroyed us in bowling, Heather won in golf, Jmo and I beat eachother silly in the boxing game. Ferda and I had some pretty heated matchups in the tennis game. She's got a wicked backhand...

Now I'm really confused. Do I really want to get one? Or am I just following the lead of Artoo, Matt and Jmo? It certainly is fun, and I know both Ferda and I would like to play it, but is it worth all those C-notes?

Your thoughts on the new Nintendo Wii?

Like anything in this world, I equate it to the simple 'dollar a day'.

If the Wii is...$250, will you play it 250 times? If so, then it's worth the purchase!

Now granted, this formula doesn't work for big ticket items like cars, houses, or a cotton candy machine. But it works in the most part for the smaller (under $1K) items. LIke an iPod! I recommend that no one gets an iPod if they don't feel they will use it with the 'dollar a day' theory.

dollar a day theory, interesting.

That's a good theory, hard to put into practice, though, eh? Hard to count I mean...

Hmmmm

Wow Palmer - good call!

I would like to pick up a new Wii, but I'm also not sure. That is a good chunk of change that would be better spent on Christmas gifts...

Buy the Wii James! Just DO IT! Then Alex and I will be able to come over to your pad and play it! COME ON JAMES, you know you want it! Buy the Wii!

Holly?! Why do you want to play it so bad Holly?!

I like Ryan's theory... James, I'm sure you and Ferda will make good use of the Wii... I think Ferda alone will play it more than $250 times!

On the other hand, Mike wants to get a compressor kit but I doubt he'll use it 240 times.

I will warn all of you Wii-owners of the potential damage that the Wii could cause!

Alright, so there's the theory put into practice.

Does Mike REALLY need a compressor kit if he isn't going to use it 240 times? Probably not! Go for the rental!

Now, considering I haven't thought out this theory fully yet, I suppose there are exceptions such as:

1) If you think you would use a compressor 5 times in your life and the cost of renting it would exceed the actual cost of the item, then by all means, buy it.

Here's an example of how my theory changed my buying habits. I used to buy a lot of DVDs. My dollar a day theory cut my movie purchases down by 99%. I really looked at how many times I would watch a movie and if it was worth the $20. That would be watching the movie twenty times in my life.

Most of the times, I said no. I thoguht that I could either borrow it or rent it if I wished to see it again. But if I figured I would watch it multiple times in my life, then for sure I will pick it up. Although, clause #1 up above could relate to this also and if I figured that I would rent it more than the actual cost, then for sure I would buy it.

Palmer how would you rate things that are used concurrently.

Wii $250, will I use it 250 times, yes.
Zelda Twilight princess game $6X.00 will I use it 6X times, yes
Rayman game (same)
another Wiimote $60
Another numchuck $30

etc....

Right...concurrent items.

Well, regardless of how you use them concurrently, as long as you use them, it counts towards it`s purchase. So if you use your Wii, game and extra control pad, they each get a use out of it, so it`s good to go!

I`ve wanted to share this theory with people for some time...perhaps I will create a blog entry once this conversation dies down.

honestly, it`s helped me in the long term for gauging whether I should rent an item or purchase it outright. Nowadays, you can rent virtually anything. Dare I say (gasp) even some video games are worth a rental rather than a purchase. For example, if you knew you would just play Zelda once in your life until you finished it, it may be cheaper to rent it for a month rather than buy it out right. Alright...bad example as the number probably don`t match. But the compressor is a prime example.

i don't think you guys should get it. any gaming system where ferda is actually superior to james in a sporting event, is obviously flawed. plus, she will be very upset after the spanking i give her on the system, malgré le fait que je n'ai pas un wii moi-même, and i wouldn't want her taking out her frustrations on james after i leave!

although...those wii commercials are very entertaining.

I don't see where one can go wrong with buying a Wii... maybe you can see you Gamecube and offset the cost of the Wii with the $$$.

We are having soo much fun with ours. Levels the playing field in some games with the innovative gameplay. Girlz can sometime beat guys on the Wii (tee-hee!)
